PUPILS at Sacred Heart Primary school in Southend have been learning about gardening by taking part in a national potato-growing competition.
A gardening club was set up as part of the competition, and now the pupils are ready to harvest their vegetables. All food grown will be sold at the school gate to raise money for next season’s produce.
Win O’Sullivan, who runs the club after school, said: “For the competition we have to weigh the potatoes and send in pictures. We have an area in our playground where we can grow the vegetables, and we have harvested about 50lbs of potatoes so far.”
Pupils also grew courgettes, beans, carrots, herbs, tomatoes and lettuces.
