HOSPITAL staff gathered to pay their respects to armed forces past and present with a special flag-raising ceremony as part of the lead-up to Armed Forces Day.

In line with organisations throughout the country, the hospital, raised a specially-designed Armed Forces Day flag yesterday.

The event was attended by Tina Carroll, a sister in the hospital’s ophthalmic department who has seen active service in the Royal Naval Reserves medical branch and Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps.

Medical student Anna Todd, currently studying at the hospital, who serves with a Territorial Army field hospital was also present along with Lee Markham, originally from Basildon, who is about to train with the movement squadron at RAF Brize Norton.

John Gilham, the hospital’s chief executive, said: “Southend Hospital is extremely proud to be part of this UK-wide celebration to show our gratitude to all those who serve our country in the armed forces.”

On Thursday at 4pm, the hospital will join with the Royal British Legion to unveil three specially-planted red, white and blue commemorative flower beds, planted in the style of the Union Jack.
