CASTLE Point MP Bob Spink has added his thumbprint to an unusual petition designed to raise awareness of the 9.2 million African children who die every year before reaching their fifth birthday.

The Save the Children petition aims to collect thousands of thumb prints as part of its Make Your Mark campaign.

The petition will then be handed to leaders, including Gordon Brown, at this summer’s G8 summit in Italy.

Adrian Lovett, from Save the Children, said world leaders were falling behind on their promise to cut by two thirds by 2015 the number of children who die so young.

He said: “During this financial crisis, world leaders have acted fast to rescue banks. The world’s poorest families risk being left on the sidelines. “ For details visit www.savethechildren.org.uk/makeyourmark
