THREE disabled Essex soldiers have set sail as the guests of a trust which encourages disabled youngsters to enjoy activities afloat.

Private Martyn Tyrrell, from Dovercourt, and Private Matt Woolard, and Corporal Billy Moore, both from Southend, all suffered combat injuries which have left them with disabilities.

Pte Tyrell was injured by a mine in Afghanistan in 2007, Corporal Moore was shot in the arm and ended up winning the Military Cross for bravery, while Pte Woolard, lost his leg below the knee.

They have joined 14 comrades from 1st Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment aboard the sailing ship Queen Galadriel, which is owned by the Cirdan Sailing Trust.

Nick Back, chief executive of the trust, said: “The Royal Anglians are our local regiment and this voyage shows our appreciation of the work it has done and continues to do.”

The soldiers are due to arrive back in Portsmouth on Friday.
