FORMER Southend Tory councillor Melvyn Day has been selected as the party’s candidate to fight the Independent heartland of Westborough Ward at the next local elections in May.

Mr Day was successful as the first Conservative in years to win in St Luke’s ward, but was then deselected by the party when he was due for re-election.

Mr Day said while Westborough had been represented by Independents in recent years, having a Conservative voice again would add strength to the present team.

He said: “I hope I can build on my reputation of being committed to the voters and can convince residents that having an ‘independent’ Conservative voice will help to bring fresh hope and improve the lives of residents.”

He backs the Tory policy of wanting to bring more power to the people and is passionate about encouraging the younger generation to engage more in the community.

Mr Day added: “This is particularly important when it comes to looking after the environment, which is of particular importance to such a densely-populated area as Westborough.”
