TWO schools are staying open despite fears pupils may have come down with swine flu.

Tests are being carried out on four pupils at Gable Hall School, in Corringham, and on a child at Chafford Hundred Campus after all complained of flu-like symptoms.

Letters have been sent to parents informing them of the situation, while a recorded information message was left on the answerphone at Gable Hall so parents can get the latest updates.

But some parents have raised concerns the schools are remaining open.

A statement issued by Gable Hall, in Southend Road, read: “The school is following Department for Children, Schools and Families guidelines with regard to the current outbreak of influenza and is in touch with the local authority and the local health protection unit, which offers advice on anti-virals and whether the school should close.

“The current advice is the school should stay open, and headteacher John King is in daily contact with the daily authorities. Parents will be advised of any change in policy.”

Mr King added: “We are following guidelines and any child exhibiting flu-like symptoms at school will be referred to their parents for them to contact their GPs.”

Chris Tomlinson, headteacher at Chafford Hundred Campus, in Mayflower Road, Chafford, defended his school’s decision to stay open.

He said: “A girl was with someone over the weekend who had a confirmed case of swine flu.

“She later felt unwell, but her case has not been confirmed and she was advised to stay at home.

“She hasn’t been in school since the weekend, but I sent letters out to parents informing them of what has happened.

“The risk is minimal so the school obviously stays open.

“We are fully compliant with all the Government’s medical requirements asked of us.”

But one parent, who asked not to be named, said: “I think people should know about this and the school should be closed.”
