A NEW community initiative is being launched to ensure the charm of Old Leigh is protected.

Leigh Town Council has joined forces with businesses and residents to create the Leigh Old Town Community Group following its Good for Leigh improvement campaign.

The group is aiming to tackle problems ranging from crime, antisocial behaviour, rubbish, parking, noise and the upkeep of the railway bridges leading to the Old Town.

The group was launched following concerns raised at a meeting between the council, publicans, traders and residents.

Carole Mulroney, Leigh town councillor and group chairman, said: “The group has arisen from the Good for Leigh campaign and how we could continue that campaign, but looking at other areas across the Old Town.”

She added the group had reached agreement about ways to improve the environment of the Old Town, and also was making sure its role as a working fishermen’s port was supported alongside its other attractions.

The original meeting, held in July, was called to address issues linked to bars and pubs.

The group will meet regularly and work with other bodies, including Southend.gov.uk" target="_blank">Southend Council and the police. Mrs Mulroney said: “I was delighted at the response we got from publicans initially.

“I am equally delighted that virtually all sections of the Old Town have embraced the idea the community needs to come together for the benefit of all.”

The group is currently looking for a representative from the cockling industry.
