RESIDENTS are hoping for a new beginning now a troublesome pub has finally closed.

The Cutley Lynch, in Hart Road, Thundersley, was boarded up last week following a long-running dispute between the landlady, Fiona Johnstone, and owners Enterprise Inns.

In September, Ms Johnstone was evicted by a Southend County Court judge after she fell behind with her rent to the brewery company. She was ordered to leave by October 12.

The pub remained open in defiance of the order, but now appears to have finally closed for good.

A relieved resident who lives close to the pub, but did not want to be named, said he was pleased.

He said: “I’ve lived here for the past 20 years, and we had nothing but trouble from that place.

“The police have been called, there’s been rowdiness outside, cars parked all down the street – it’s been a real pain.”

In May 2007, police ordered a review of the pub’s licence following concerns about antisocial behaviour in and around the premises.

It was allowed to stay open, but was given 24 conditions, including having staff re-trained so they could better spot underage drinkers and intoxicated customers.

Colin Ward, 56, also of Hart Road, said the Cutley Lynch had quietened down in recent years.

He hopes the pub is turned into houses or a new shop.

He said: “It’s a pretty ugly building if I’m honest, so I think they should just knock it down and start again.”

“A couple of new houses or a local business would be a fine replacement.”
