Lord Hanningfield is facing fraud charges over his House of Lords expenses claims, it was claimed today.

The Daily Telegraph reported that detectives will "imminently" pass a file on the Tory peer and Essex County Council leader to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Director of Public Prosecution Keir Starmer will then decide whether Lord Hanningfield, along with five other MPs and peers, will be charged.

Lord Hanningfield claimed £100,000 over seven years to stay in London while on House of Lords business despite living 46 miles away in West Hanningfield, near Chelmsford.

It is believed he has been investigated over whether he returned to his Essex home while claiming for the "overnight allowances".

Scotland Yard described the article as speculation.
