HEROIC firefighters rescued three children from a smoke-filled bedroom in a burning house.

The youngsters, aged one, four, and six, were rescued by firefighters from a house in Princes Street, Southend.

It is thought the fire started at around 3.30am today, Sunday. Station officer Barry May from Southend Fire Station said: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the heavily smoke logged house to extinguish the fire in the downstairs bedroom.

“The fire is believed to have started when a pillow had fallen onto a LPG gas heater and caught fire.

"Three children aged, six, four and one where rescued by firefighters from a heavily smoke logged bedroom upstairs. The mother and children were all placed in the care of the ambulance service suffering from smoke inhalation."
