A TEENAGE girl was rescued by hovercraft from the freezing Thames estuary.

The Thames Coastguard Service received a call at 4.20pm yesterday (Sun) from the friend of a 14-year-old girl who was stuck knee-deep in the water, off the beach by Lifstan Way.

A female police officer also waded up to her waist into the estuary, to check that the girl was okay, but she was apparently unable to move because her legs were so cold and her feet had stuck in the sand.

The RNLI lifeboat was called to the scene and she was pulled on-board and taken to shore.

The girl, from Southend, and the female police officer were both taken to hospital by ambulance.
