AS a thaw appears to have set in, the remaining snow and icy conditions have closed a school in Hockley and caused the cancellation of several social club meetings in Southend.

The BBC's list of school closures for today, Monday, January 11, includes Westerings Primary School, in Sunny Road, Hawkwell.

The heavy snow which was expected to fall yesterday failed to materialise, meaning all other schools are open.

This is good news for students as there had been fears A-level and GCSE exams this week could be disrupted by continuing bad weather.

Travel on main roads is easier this morning as a result of the lack of new snowfall.

However, as the snow underfoot persists, a meeting of the Eastwood Floral Art Group has been cancelled.

The group was due to meet at Eastwood Community Centre, Western Approaches, Eastwood, at 7.45pm tonight.

Another club which has cancelled all its meetings this week is Club 60, which is held at Queensway House, in Essex Street, Southend.

Similarly cancelled is an Essex Wildlife Trust meeting which was due to be held at Little Havens Hospice in Thundersley, and a meeting of the Westcliff Townswomen's Guild, which was due to be held at Westcliff Free Church, in London Road, Westcliff, at 2pm this afternoon.
