HEALTH bosses are urging people to get help to stop smoking as part of an ambitious new drive to halve the number of smokers in south Essex by 2020.

NHS South East Essex has backed new Government plans to improve people’s health, and protect children from tobacco by banning cigarette displays in shops and stopping the sale of tobacco at vending machines.

Bosses at the primary care trust have also pledged to play their part to help an estimated 68,000 smokers quit in Southend, Rochford and Castle Point.

This is despite admitting the health trust will have to scale back services to help smokers quit in the next few years due to budget shortfalls.

In 2008/2009, NHS South East Essex Stop Smoking Services helped 2,809 people to give up.
