COUNCIL bosses say they are looking into knocking down and redeveloping empty garages where an eight-year-old boy pricked his hand on a used needle.

The incident happened on Sunday, May 9, while the youngster was playing with friends by the disused garages in Dengayne, Basildon.

The boy is now being tested for HIV and on heavy medication and could have to wait another month for the results to come in.

The boy’s mum reported the incident to the council and officers from St Georges Community Housing, which looks after the council’s housing stock, including garages, cleared the area and boarded up the garages.

Now the council says it is looking at possible long-term solutions, which include demolishing the garages and redeveloping the site.

Ash Ahmed, principal development officer at Basildon Council, said: “Due to the poor condition of the garages and the antisocial behaviour they attract, the council and St Georges are in discussions with tenants and private owners regarding possible demolition.

“While the practicalities of demolishing the garages are being considered, St Georges is continuing to undertake weekly inspections and ensuring the garages are secure and clear from debris.

“The site is under consideration for redevelopment and the council is working with partners to assess the feasibility of doing so.”

Pat Rackley, Basildon councillor for St Martins, which includes Dengayne, said she was impressed with the council’s efforts.

The Labour councillor said: “Officers are working very hard to get the garages knocked down as soon as possible.”
