A MAN has been charged in connection with a road smash on Southend seafront in which a paramedic was seriously injured.

The collision happened at Western Esplanade on Sunday(May 23) when a quad bike struck two parked vehicles .

A paramedic who was assisting with a previous collision was seriously injured.

James Lewis, 28, of Broomfield Street, Poplar was charged with causing grievous bodily harm, dangerous driving, causing injury by wanton and furious driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and escaping from lawful custody.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Southend magistrates’ court this morning.

A 21-year-old man from Rainham, who was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, has been bailed until August 6 pending further inquiries.

The 56-year-old paramedic, who is from Eastwood, is still in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
