PUPILS who helped a Rotary club win a top fundraising prize got a look at the trophy and a special, signed Southend United shirt.

Southend Rotary Club roped in King John School, in Thundersley, and Southend United to help raise money for Rotary International’s campaign to eradicate Polio worldwide.

The Blues played a match in a special purple strip to promote the campaign and gave away vouchers so school children could buy tickets to their match against Walsall for £3. They then gave away the shirts from the match to be auctioned.

Year 7 pupils from King John helped to promote the match.

The event won the Rotary club a prize for the best event in Britain and Ireland at the Magic of Rotary awards.

It helped the club raise £9,000 for the End Polio campaign.

President Bryan Woodford showed off the trophy and a shirt Franck Moussa wore when he scored two goals during the charity game.

Mr Woodford said: “Southend United have been great and King John has been a very helpful school so we visited to thank them for their help.”
