Basildon and Billericay MP John Baron has put his second home on the market.

Mr Baron is honouring a promise to sell up in the wake of the expenses scandal.

The Mallards in Bramble Tye, Noak Bridge, was largely used as his constituency office, with two members of staff, who did not live there, manning the phones between Monday and Friday.

Mr Baron would also hold surgeries for constituents at the house on Fridays.

The house, advertised on Rightmove.com, is described as “well maintained” with en-suite to bedroom one and a garage and driveway for numerous vehicles.

It is pictured still showing Vote John Baron posters in the front garden.

The three-bedroom property is on the market for £259,995. The purchase price in 2000 was £153,500.

If Mr Baron achieves the full asking price he would virtually be able to clear the two controversial equity releases taken on the property in 2003 and 2004.

The first was for £87,000, the second for £34,035.

Following the Legg Review Mr Baron had to pay back £8,800 to cover interest claimed for the rule-breaking £34,035.

Yet he has been able to keep around £23,000 in respect of interest he has so far claimed on the £87,000 in 2003 – the Legg Review focused on MPs’ claims made between 2004 and 2009.

It is also unclear if the new occupier will be able to continue the use of the ground floor as an office, as agreed by Basildon Council with Mr Baron.

The Echo asked the council, but was told Clive Simpson, council head of planning, was said to be too busy to answer.

Mr Baron, who has said he will forego a second home and rent a new office after the sale, did not return our calls.
