HUNDREDS of people lined the streets to see floats, dancers, and musicians take part in the Wickford Carnival.

Spectators admired the colourful costumes of children and adults, as they danced to music through the town.

About 30 groups took part in the carnival including volunteers, businesses and charities, to help raise money for local community organisations.

The procession left Church End Lane at about 12.30pm on Saturday. It made its way down High Street before arriving at Nevendon Park, at about 2.30pm.

Angela Guest, chairwoman for the carnival, said: “The carnival was fabulous and more than 1,000 people turned up.

“The day was all about the children enjoying themselves, and it was nice to see a great turnout.

“This was a real community event because we received huge donations from people happy to support us.”

Hayley Mejias, director of Hayley’s school of dance, added: “It was a lovely sunny day to hold the carnival.

“We had 100 children register with us to take part, and they enjoyed doing this to help raise money for charity, because they wanted to give back to their community.”

The carnival has so far raised £3,500 and the money will be used to support community groups in Wickford.
