FIREFIGHTERS shut down Southend town centre after fire engulfed a chip shop.

Dozens of officers spent more than three hours battling the flames which tore through The Royal Fish and Chip bar on the corner of Alexandra Street and the High Street on Friday.

The blaze forced police to rope off large sections of the town centre and close down busy shops, while thronging crowds gathered to watch smoke pouring out of the building’s roof.

No one was seriously injured in the fire, although two people had to be treated for smoke inhalation.
