PLANS to build 206 more homes, shops, and a community hall on the run-down Craylands estate in Basildon have been unveiled.

Swan Housing has submitted plans as part of the £250million rebuild of the estate and the former Fryerns School site, which has been renamed Beechwood Village.

The new designs unveiled will see a mixture of private and social housing, made up of one to four bedroom flats, maison-ettes, and houses, with 300 parking spaces, shops, and a hall for residents to hire.

About 192 homes will be demolished as part of the project to make way for the new homes.

A ten-year regeneration of the site involves four phases and will see more than 1,200 new homes, an adult education centre, and a health centre created on the site.

So far, the early stages of the scheme have seen 201 new homes built on the estate.

Tony Ball, leader of Basildon Council, welcomed the plans.

He said: “This development is all about improving the lives of people who live here and for the future, and providing them with quality housing.

“It will be a good thing the community hall will be self managed by the residents. They will have ownership of it.”

Higgins Construction is undertaking the building work, which will also see tree-lined streets, pavements and cycle paths built on the estate.

Mark Thompson, Swan Housing deputy chief executive, said: “This planning application reflects the dialogue between developers and local people about the area’s regeneration.”
