PATIENTS who have undergone metal on metal hip replacements are being closely monitored due to serious health fears.

The friction between the two plates in this type of artificial hip produces chemical fragments which can leak into the blood and cause inflammation.

Southend Hospital have contacted all patients who have undergone surgery using metal on metal hip replacements to offer advice and ease their concerns.

Julie Lander, associate business director for orthopaedics, said: “While there is no published evidence to support these anxieties, this group of patients will be invited back to see their consultant who will answer their questions and arrange for any necessary tests.”

Almost 50,000 patients throughout the country are reported to be affected and could need annual checks to ensure they do not suffer adverse reactions.

A special helpline has been set up and patients who have concerns should call 07534 100980 between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday.
