A TOUCH of West End glamour will come to Leigh once the iconic Grand Hotel is brought up to scratch, according to its owner.

Mick Norcross, who owns the landmark hotel and is a star of reality show The Only Way is Essex, has attempted to win over locals by producing a glossy brochure on the proposals.

The brochure provides a glimpse of the colour and sparkle the regeneration will bring, showcasing the classic piano lounge bar, the restaurant and tea rooms, as well as the spa, containing treatment rooms, a steam room, sauna and jacuzzi.

Outlining his vision, Mr Norcross, who also owns the Sugar Hut in Brentwood, said he wants to restore the 1899 building back to its original glory to create a first class hotel, spa and restaurant to fully integrate into Leigh.

In a statement in the brochure he said: “I have long admired this iconic building and dreamed of rejuvenating it to reflect the original architecture.

“It has been my desire to bring the quality West End hotel experience to Essex and I see this building as the perfect opportunity to achieve my dream.”

Once complete, the hotel will employ people from the surrounding area as well as making the most of local produce on offer.

Mike Hood, who lives opposite the derelict hotel in the Broadway, believes the concept is perfect for the building.

Mr Hood, 25, said: “This is something quite niche because there is no boutique hotel nearby. It is something that will attract people to the town.

“It will bring more footfall to the town and will create a ripple effect for businesses.

“The building looks terrible; it has metal boards up and the grass is overgrown. It is sad to see it the way it is at the moment.

“It is a great idea and Mick seems very sincere in what he is trying to achieve.”

The plans however, have not been without controversy and on March 26 councillors will debate proposals to allow alcohol to be served until 2.30am on Friday and Saturday nights, until 1am from Sunday to Wednesday and until 2am on Thursdays.
