Armed police were called to Thorney Bay Caravan Park, Canvey, after a member of the public reported hearing gunshots.
They arrived at about 9.50am and arrested a 39-year-old man they feared had a gun.
Detectives quizzed him on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
He remains in police custody.
