A BUSTLING congregation will finally be able to attend a service in person at a church’s new £830,000 extension.

The congregation at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, in Wickhay, Basildon, has moved into the new hall.

In its previous state, the church, which has about 600 members, was bursting at the seams, with up to 100 parishioners having to watch services via videolink on Sundays.

Now, there are an additional 100 seats as well as a new granite font, lectern and altar made by Bradford Memorials, in Chelmsford.

Father Dominic Howarth said: “The church looks beautiful and we are really pleased that, after eight months, the building work is complete.

“You get a real sense of peace when you come into the building, and if you are not religious it is still appreciated by everyone.

“It should be said that our parishioners were very generous, and donated £20,000 from their own pockets towards the project. It has given us all a real sense of ownership.”

The church has seen a surge in its membership because many Indian and Filipino families with a strong Roman Catholic background have moved to the area after getting work as doctors and nurses at Basildon Hospital.

The money to build the extension came from the previous sale of a chapel in Whitmore Way, Basildon.

Father Howarth said he knew the church needed to be extended two years ago, and he was really excited to have the building work complete.

He added: “We have a hall, and we are keen to let the community know it is there, so we can help out anyone by holding events or meetings.

“The church is something for the community and not just for the congregation. It’s so important to let the community know this.”

An open day is being held at the church on Sunday, June 3, from 2pm until 5pm.

The church will also be showing the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations on a big screen and serving cream teas.
