POLICE were called to Rochford train station after a woman was seen lying on the railway tracks.

Trains were temporarily suspended on the Greater Anglia line which runs from Southend Victoria through Rochford, Rayleigh and Shenfield to London Liverpool Street while officers attempt to coax the woman back to the platform.

Passengers raised the alarm at around 11:50am today after seeing her on the tracks.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "Police were called to Rochford station after a person was reported laying on the tracks. The incident was reported at 11.46am and officers from Essex Police also attended.

"A female was removed from the tracks and taken to hospital for her own safety."

Train services were resumed by 12:20pm after she was escorted from the railway line shortly after 12pm.

Three services were cancelled following the incident and rail users suffered delays of up to 30 minutes to their journey.
