VOLUNTEERS will help clean up a stretch of the River Crouch where hundreds of fish were killed by pollution.

The Environment Agency has launched an investigation into what caused the pollution a month ago, which killed at least 200 fish, where the river passes through Memorial Park, in Wickford.

A team of volunteers is going to the site this Sunday to pick up shopping trolleys and other rubbish dumped on the shallow river’s bed. They hope this will encourage fish to return.

One of the volunteers, Peter Steward, 51, of Seven Acres, Wickford, said: “We will be pulling out all the old rubbish. At the moment it’s got to a point where you can’t fish down there any more, so we want to get it back to the point where anglers will want to come back again.

“We want to see the river thriving with fish again.”

Battlesbridge councillor Roy Hart will bring along a tractor, at least one trailer and wading clothing for the volunteers to wear. Anyone is welcome to help out.

The volunteers will meet at midday by the park gates, at the Highcliff Road entrance, before heading to the river. Call 07709 947279.
