FOR perhaps the first time in history, a football club’s players have been praised for their rubbish performances.

Dennis Rugg, chairman of Canvey Island Football Club, has spoken in glowing terms of his players and staff, after they took part in a litter-pick organised by Castle Point Council.

Mr Rugg said the litter pick in the area around the club’s ground, in Park Lane, had been strongly supported in the community.

He said: “We were delighted to be invited by the council to join in the community clean up-day.

“As a community-led organisation, we are very aware of the benefits to local residents who want to see their area kept clean and tidy.

“Our young people are enthusiastic to show they too are responsible citizens who care about the environment where they live and spend their leisure time.”

The litter pick was attended by players from senior and youth teams, along with club supporters and Castle Point councillors.

Canvey councillor Ray Howard, who is also responsible for the environment, said: “We are delighted Canvey Island FC agreed to take part in our clean-up day. Firstly, it’s great to have the support of our local team.

“But even more importantly, by taking part, the players are sending a clear message to the community – particularly to our young people. Perhaps, after seeing their local players pitching in, people will think twice before dropping litter on the floor and will find a bin instead.”
