FIVE arrested for attempted murder following a stabbing in Rayleigh have been released on bail.

A 32-year-old man had been attacked inside the Downhall Stores off licence, in Downhall Road, at about 9.20pm last Wednesday. He was loaded onto a stretcher and taken by ambulance to Southend Hospital where his condition was described as stable.

Police then raided a house in Downhall Way on Thursday morning before arresting two men, aged 44 and 43, and a 17-year-old boy. They then went on to arrest a 15-year-old boy from Rayleigh and a 19-year-old man from Poplar, East London, later that afternoon. They were questioned over the weekend before being released on bail until September 28.

The victim's brother, 23-year-old man from Rayleigh, had already been arrested at the shop on suspicion of a separate assault which was connected to the fracas. He has now been bailed until Thursday, July 15 pending further enquiries.
