SOUTHEND council is set to discuss its plans to compulsory purchase Roots Hall.

The cabinet will receive an update report next week on a resolution it made more than three years ago to compulsory purchase land at Roots Hall which is needed to kickstart plans for a new Southend United football stadium.

The cabinet is set to agree that the cumpolsory purchase order decision will be reviewed at the November 10 cabinet meeting.

The new stadium scheme has been beset with delays.

The CPO resolutions were made on March 1 2012 but have never been made because Roots Hall Limited and Sainsbury’s have not entered into the required agreements or wanted the council to proceed.

The orders would affect businesses which have yet to move out of the area, including Super Pizza on the corner of Victoria Avenue and Fairfax Drive.

Ron Woodley, leader of the council, said: “The council wholeheartedly backs the football club’s ambitions to move to a new ground. However three and half years have passed and circumstances have changed, so it is right to re-consider the Roots Hall CPO status once we have the relevant information that we have requested.

“It is our intention to bring a report to the next meeting of cabinet which will detail any changed circumstances. We have also requested additional information on the progress on the Roots Hall and Fossetts Farm development proposal which will allow us to make an informed decision on how we proceed.”

The cabinet will also discuss withdrawing a resolution to CPO a small parcel of land at Fossetts Farm. It has been confirmed by Roots Hall Limited that the CPO for this land is no longer needed.
