A RESCUE operation to save fish at Priory Park was a success.
Firefighters were called in two weeks ago to pump water out and back into the Southend lake to reoxygenate the water.
Now after the dedicated efforts of fishermen to continue the pumping for more than a week, the water is back to normal and the majority of fish are thriving.
Steve Osborne, secretary of the Parks Angling Club which manages the lake, called the fire brigade in after spotting fish gasping for air.
He said: βIn the end, we only lost about a dozen small fish. Without the fire brigade, we would have lost a lot more. We want to say a big thank you to the fire service who were wonderful.β
The problem occurred on August 12 when high temperatures caused oxygen levels to drop.
