A NEW cycle track at Chalkwell Esplanade will be officially opened this Sunday to kick off National Bike Week throughout Southend.

Mayor Ann Holland will formally cut the ribbon to launch the new cycle track which forms part of route 16 that runs from Basildon to Shoebury East Beach as part of the National Cycle Network.

The ceremony is one of a variety of events taking place throughout Southend to celebrate National Bike Week.

Cycle Southend’s bike crew is currently touring schools throughout the town to promote safe cycling and its positive health benefits.

Cycle fun will also be at the Shoebury Fair at Shoeburyness High School, Caulfield Road this Saturday where children can have a go on a range of different bikes including mountain and BMX bikes.

The junior bikeathon, a one mile charity sponsored cycle ride will also take place this Sunday from 9am until 11.30am starting at Grosvenor Road to Chalkwell Esplanade at Chalkwell Station.

Children up to 12-years-old can take part in the bike ride run by the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research charity.
