THE bomb squad detonated a controlled explosion after a suspicious package found outside a Southend mosque.
Officers were called to the Essex Jamme Masjid mosque, in Chelmsford Avenue, Southend, at 9am this morning, Tuesday, after a suitcase was left outside.
Chelmsford Avenue was sealed off, as well as part of North Road, and residents have been told to stay inside their homes as a precaution.
Sweyne Avenue was also closed but reopened before the explosion was triggered around midday.
The suitcase was found to only contain some pillows and coathangers, and was not a bomb. FULL STORY IN TOMORROW'S ECHO.
