MICKEY Spillane is aiming to show Chesterfield what they missed out on when he makes his Southend United debut at the Proact Stadium tomorrow.

The Spireites were also keen on bringing in the 23-year-old midfielder when he was made available by Dagenham & Redbridge.

But Spillane eventually opted for Blues and is keen to get off to a good start this weekend.

“I’m looking forward to making my debut and it’s funny how it’s worked out with my first game being against Chesterfield,” said Spillane.

“There was interest from them and I’m sure something could’ve happened but I thought Southend were a better team and that’s why I chose them.

“I also got on well with the manager here when I spoke to him and it’s nearer to home as well so that’s what helped to make up my mind.

“Chesterfield are a very good side but I’m very excited to have come to Southend.

“I think we can get promotion this season and would be great to get off to a good start tomorrow.”

Spillane has already triumphed once at Chesterfield this season after helping Dagenham win there 2-1 back in October.

And he is now seeking more of the same on Saturday.

The midfielder was originally due to make his Southend debut against Plymouth Argyle last weekend.

But that clash was postponed because of a frozen pitch, enabling Spillane more time to settle in to his new surroundings.

“The lads have been great and I’ve settled in well,” said Spillane.

“It’s always a little odd when you’re at a new club but they’ve made it easy for me.

“Funnily enough, one of my first sessions was at the David Beckham Academy and it was strange because Dagenham were there too!

“They were in the opposite dressing room and I had to make sure I got the right one.”

Spilllane looks set to go straight in to the starting line-up for tomorrow’s game and will line up in midfield alongside Kevan Hurst who is available after shaking off a back problem.

However defender Ryan Cresswell (shoulder) and midfielder Marc Laird (hamstring) will both face late fitness tests while striker Britt Assombalonga (ankle) is expected to miss out.
