SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD Christian Gray continued to prove he is a rising star for East Essex Triathlon Club as he came runner-up in the Basildon Aquathlon on Sunday.

The aquathlon event which consists of a 400m swim and then a 5km run saw nearly 300 contestants take part from as far away as Norfolk, Cambridge and Ipswich and took place at Basildon Sporting Village. Gray finished in 24m 53s, which was 30 seconds off winner Peter Hawkings (Les Stables Zerod Race Team) who is six years his senior.

Hayley Hawes, another East Essex Tri athlete, also impressed as she was the fastest woman to finish (28m 2s) and came 10th overall, while her team-mate Janice Brown was the first veteran female to finish in 30m 56s.

The first male veteran to finish was Ian George in 26m 17s.

In the youth age groups, Benfleet’s Kiera Tippett was second in the 13-14 age group, one spot ahead of East Essex Tri youngster Sinead Clark, who clocked the fastest run section.

In the boys’ 11-12 category, East Essex Tri’s Leon Wheeler finished in second place.
