SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown felt his side were taught a footballing lesson at Rochdale on Wednesday night.

Blues were beaten 4-2 at Spotland, to leave the new Blues boss still waiting for his first win since taking over from Paul Sturrock.

And he had no complaints about the result at Rochdale.

“We got taught a lesson in how to play football on a surface that wasn’t very good to play football on,” said Brown, whose side sit 12th in the League Two table.

“Rochdale did well to turn our two centre halves and played football in the right areas, unfortunately we played in the wrong areas and that cost us.

“I thought it was harsh that we went in 1-0 down at half-time but we did very well from a well worked set piece to get ourselves level.

“We had got ourselves back in the game but then basic individual errors seemed to just happen and that cost us massively.

“Barry Corr should’ve walked away with the match ball and when you’ve got a striker who should’ve scored three and you still would not have won the game something is wrong.”
