CONCORD Rangers striker Jacob Cleaver is on trial with Championship new-boys Bournemouth.

The 19-year-old from Westcliff has been invited to train with the south coast club after catching the eye of scouts with some impressive displays in the non league.

The ex-FitzWimarc School pupil has previously attracted interest from pro clubs, and has said before he’d love to play for Southend United.

His trial with Bournemouth means he’s following in the footsteps of another Concord old boy Lyle Taylor, who earned a move to the Cherries after scoring a hatful of goals for the Beachboys, and has recently signed for Sheffield United after an impressive spell with Falkirk.

Concord manager Danny Cowley said: “We have some very good players here, but out of all of them Jacob is the one I get most calls about.

“He went out on loan at Redbridge last year and scored 20 goals for them, and he’s just one of those players who makes a lot of runs and gets in good positions and gets on the end of lots of chances.

“He has not played a lot for me at Concord, but his stats are incredible; I think it works out at something like 12 goals in five or six games, and he’s often been a sub.

“Now Bournemouth want to take a look at him and they are paying for his travel and accommodation and he’ll have a week in which he’ll be trying to impress them.”

Former Southend United youth teamer Cleaver told the Echo last year that would love to turn-out for Blues one day following a six-goal haul in a trial game at Barnet which resulted in interest from League One side Leyton Orient and Scottish Premier League side Dundee United.

Cowley wished Cleaver luck at Bournemouth, who were prompted to the second-flight last season as runners-up in League One.

But the Beachboys boss says he hopes he returns to his newly promoted Conference South side, where he has been in impressive goal-scoring form in pre-season.

Cowley said: “I’ve known Jacob for a long time. I used to teach him at Fitz, and sometimes you fall into a trap of always seeing a player as one of the youths.

“But there comes a time when you have to give the younger boys a chance and he could be an important part of what we want to do at Concord this season.”
