DANNY Heale was delighted with Canvey’s 1-0 league win over Grays on Tuesday, and said they could have won more convincingly.

A second-half goal from the recalled Sheldon Sellears was enough to give the Gulls a second win over their Essex rivals in a fortnight, and back-to-back Ryman Premier wins.

It was the perfect response for a club rocked by the loss of the their new striker John Sands, who has been ruled out until the new year after having his jaw broken on a night out on Saturday, just hours after scoring brace in a 2-1 win over Hampton.

Canvey boss Heale said: “We could have won 6-0. We had chance after chance but it’s just the way our season is going at the moment.

“John Sands played on Saturday and bang, bang – they went in.

“Jay Curran should have scored tonight but their keeper has made an unbelievable save, but lucky for us Sheldon was there to finish it off.”

The winning goal came on 64 minutes when man-of-the-match Harrison Chatting led a quick-counter attack down the left wing and crossed for Curran to prompt a fine save from Lamar Johnson, before Sellears tapped-home the rebound.

There was late drama on the other side of the island where two injury-time goals ensured it was honours even between Skrill South newcomers Concord and Whitehawk.

Hawks’ Hakeem Adelakun was sent off 10 minutes after the restart for swearing at the referee but his side went in front in the 91st minute through sub Sam Gargan, before Sam Higgins hit a late, late leveller for the hosts.
