Rob Kiernan returns to Wigan Athletic from Southend United

Echo: Rob Kiernan - has returned to Wigan Athletic from Southend United Rob Kiernan - has returned to Wigan Athletic from Southend United

SOUTHEND United's hopes of promotion have been dealt a huge blow after influential defender Rob Kiernan revealed he had been recalled by Wigan Athletic.

The 22-year-old suffered just three defeats in 15 matches after arriving at Roots Hall in early October.

But, writing on his Twitter page, Kiernan confirmed he had gone back to the Latics at the request of their new manager Uwe Rosler who the centre-back worked with while at Brentford.

“Been recalled by Wigan from my loan,” confirmed Kiernan who had been due to stay with the Shrimpers for another fortnight.

“Would like to thank everyone at the club. The gaffer, staff and lads have been brilliant and I genuinely hope you get promoted this season.”

Kiernan's departure has yet to be confirmed by the club but it could leave Blues short of defenders as Luke Prosser missed the 1-0 win at AFC Wimbledon with concussion.

Adam Thompson's loan spell from Watford is also due to expire shortly, leaving Mark Phillips as the club's only other available defender.

that is a blow as he is a very good and mobile defender - we have no others.

Well done to him though, he put a shift in every game.

Once again a problem for the club and the rough end of the loan system, we have been here before and to see players go back to their parent clubs is a massive blow, especially a good centre back like Kiernan, this system has always cost us dear over the last two seasons, until the club can get back to buying players we will always be in dire straights, Phillips and Prosser at the back doesn't inspire confidence!
Hey ho on we go.

Thank you Rob, an excellent defender of which we will hear more of.. Good luck !
No doubt Manager Brown will do his best to shore up the defence, and of course the Chairman Ron Martin will have to find funds ( a bad joke), to replenish any hope the Blues have to avoid mid table in April. !
Hopefully, though Not confident , " a Happy New Year to the Blues "for 2014.
