Michael Smith - had been a target for Southend United

SOUTHEND United have missed out on signing striker Michael Smith from Charlton Athletic.

The 22-year bagged 10 goals in 25 games during a six month loan stint at AFC Wimbledon at the start of the season.

But the 6 foot 4 inch tall forward has opted to join Swindon Town in a deal worth £100,000.

“Michael Smith had been a target of ours for this January transfer window but it does look like we’ve missed out on him now,” confirmed Blues boss Phil Brown.

“He’s chosen to join a club at a higher level which is understandable and you will always miss out on people at this time of year.

“We’re in discussions with other players now though and hopefully we will have more success there.”

Presumably we are allowed to spend some money if we were genuinely after Smith. Has the embargo been lifted, or is it a partial embargo, allowing us to spend proceeds from the cup run, but not from day to day funds?
It would be good to find a genuine goalscorer as currently we are largely reliant on the midfielders, with the occasional contribution from Barry Corr, and Freddy Eastwood seemingly only a late substitute rather than key striker.
With a potent striker, this team really could be good for promotion.
