Phil Brown, Southend United manager: "I'm proud of my players and the performance they put in. If Barry Corr's header or the shot from Michael Timlin which hit the crossbar had gone in then it might have been a different game. It just didn't quite full for us though and I think Hull's extra quality in the final third won them the game."
Steve Bruce, Hull City manager: "It was a shame this game wasn't on theTV because it had the chance to be an upset but we showed our quality near the end to kill off the game and I'm pleased with my team this afternoon in which could've been a very difficult game.
"Credit to Southend though because I thought they were terrific and they gave us a hell of a game."
