Southend United manager Phil Brown considers freshening up midfield against Mansfield Town
SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown is toying with the idea of freshening up his midfield for tomorrow’s match at Mansfield Town.
Conor Clifford, Marc Laird and Bedsente Gomis all impressed Brown in a behind closed doors friendly at West Ham United on Tuesday afternoon.
And the Blues boss is contemplating bringing them back in to the side against the Stags.
“We had three games in the space of six days so I’m certainly thinking about freshening up the side, confirmed Brown.
“We had seven games in January so it was a busy time and four or five of the lads played all of those games.
“Another four or five probably played in five or six of them and maybe that showed towards the end of the Newport game.
“Some of the lads pick themselves with how they’re performing at the moment but I do have some headaches and may look to freshen things up because our energy levels are key for our success.
“The midfield three at West Ham all pulled up trees and they are certainly in my thinking for tomorrow but it’s tough making changes when the team has been so consistent.
Blues go in to game with two defeats in their last 18 outings and sit fifth in the League Two table.
But they are still sweating on the fitness of key defender Luke Prosser who underwent surgery on his fractured cheekbone yesterday.
“We will make a late decision on Luke but he’s shown this season he will play through the pain and if he can I’m sure he will do so again at Mansfield,” said Brown.
“It’s a tough place to go, it’s quite hostile with a tight pitch and we will need to be at our best.
“We’re getting the train up though so we’ve preparing correctly and hopefully that will pay off.”
