Southend United manager Phil Brown: The next five games could decide our season
SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown feels the next five games could make or break his side’s season.
The matches come in the space of just 15 days, starting with tomorrow’s clash against Exeter City at Roots Hall.
And Brown feels the cluster of games could prove crucial.
“After this run of games we’re down to just 12 matches and I really do think these five matches will have a huge say on where we end up this season,” said the Blues boss.
“We spoke about it while we were out training in Portugal and set ourselves targets which will remain in house but everyone knows how important this little period is.
“It ultimately comes down to where the players want to be and if they still want to be in the fight for promotion towards the end of the season.
“But I also think it’s key we start off these games by getting the three points against Exeter.”
The Grecians have been struggling to find their best form this season and are currently 16th in the standings without a win since December.
But, having watched Exeter in action at Burton Albion at the start of the month, Brown is predicting a tricky afternoon.
“Exeter are a hard-working side and we will have to match that and not take anything for granted,” said Brown.
“They looked strong when I saw them play at Burton and they haven’t actually lost in three games now.
“They’ve drawn with Oxford, Portsmouth and Burton in that time and they seem to have found a new system which suits them.
“But after our recent results we will be fired up to put things right again and get back to winning ways ourselves.”
Blues have now gone four games without a win and have slipped down to seventh in the table.
