Torquay United manager Chris Hargreaves: " I kept them in there for a long while, talking about reality of where we are and we discussed the first half to the second half.
"I want more leaders in my team, we were too deep and there was a big gap in the middle which we couldn't sort out.
"It was a bad free kick to give away and a bad defensive header which lead to the goal but we need to stand up and be counted now.
"I'm a proud man, I care for this club too much and the players need to as well."
Southend United manager Phil Brown: "This was a really big win for us and certainly bigger than the one against Oxford on Monday even though we didn't play as well. It was a bronze performanve rather than gold but that's four clean shetts in a row now so we must be doing something right.
"It was also fantastic for Freddy to come on and get the goal and I gave him the biggest hug I think he's probably ever had in his life after the game."
