Southend United's Barry Corr: I want our side to go down alongside the Blues greats
BARRY Corr wants the current Southend United side to work their way in to club folklore by securing promotion this season.
The Shrimpers head in to tomorrow’s play-off semi-final second leg against Burton Albion 1-0 down.
But Corr is keen to the deficit around at Roots Hall and help ensure Blues are playing in League One next season.
“I’ve heard our fans talking about past promotion teams and they can reel off the names of every single player in a couple of minutes and I want our team to be like that in future as well,” said the striker.
“The teams that have gone up are part of the history of this football club, and the fans will always remember them for achieving that promotion.
“That’s exactly the feeling I want to have.
“In 20 years time, I want fans to remember this team, and remember that I was part of helping the club get promoted.
“I’ve said that to the other lads and they’ve all realised the big opportunity we’ve got to make history here, so I’m really hoping we can make it happen.”
Corr currently leads Blues’ scoring charts with 13 goals this season.
But, with Burton looking to protect their narrow lead, the Irishman knows opportunities will need to be taken tomorrow.
“Burton might sit back to defend their lead and we need to take our chances,” said Corr.
“As a striker a few of them will fall to me and hopefully I can get the goal to help us get to Wembley.
“I think this game will be better than the first leg and we just can’t wait to get out there now to be honest.”
Blues will also be roared on by a bumper crowd at Roots Hall.
And Corr cannot wait to sample another special atmosphere.
“On Sunday when I saw all of those away fans it gave me a bit of a tingle and I’m sure tomorrow it will be even better,”
“The fans do really help when you’re out there and giving your all, because they can give you that extra push.
“The support really does drive you on and we need it more than ever tomorrow.
“We’re still well in this tie.
“I’m sure there will be a special atmosphere at Roots Hall, and I’m sure we can turn this around and get to Wembley.”
