GYMNAST Jay Thompson wants his last ever junior international to be one to remember.

The 18-year-old has represented his country on nearly 30 occasions.

And he now wants to sign off as a junior in style at the European Championships.

“It’s my last international as a junior so it would be great to make it a good one,” said Thompson.

“As a team, we’re going out to make history by trying to win the competition for the fourth year in a row to really put a marker down.

“We want to keep hold of the title and I want to make it into some finals as well.

“The vault, floor and pommel horse are ones I’m really looking at and it would be great to come back with some medals.”

Thompson has made massive strides forward since teaming up with the South Essex Gymnastics Club last October.

The teenager was previously training in Exeter before moving up to Essex.

But he feels switching his base to Basildon has enabled him to improve.

“It was a big decision for me and my family but it was definitely the right one because I’ve got so much better since coming here,” said Thompson.

“My dad’s job was changing and he was going to be spending more time in London, so I knew I would be moving and went to look at a few clubs.

“South Essex just felt right and being able to train in the group we have, which of course includes Max Whitlock, is just fantastic and a huge help.”
