SOUTHEND High School for Boys have retained their Southend Schools Borough Athletics Championships for an amazing 32nd year.
No one has been able to get close to Southend High since they were last beaten in a borough championships in 1982.
Unsurprisingly, given the school’s sporting prowess, Southend High has been named in an Ofsted report called “Going the Extra Mile” which considers “excellence in competitive sport” as an oustanding provider of sport – one of only 10 schools in the whole country to be namechecked.
Steve Thomas, head of PE, said: “The tradition that every member of the school competes against themselves and each other breeds a strong sporting ethos. Students say it encourages team work and a sense of identity.”
