YOUNG diving sensation Tyler Humphreys has continued his fine season with another medal-winning performance at Luton.

The 11-year-old from Shoebury claimed silver (three metre platform) and bronze (five metre platform) medals at the Luton Challenge last weekend, in his first competition since he moved to a more advanced level of competition.

He also came fourth on the one metre platform.

Tyler, who trains at Crystal Palace Diving, is now competing in the C1 category, meaning he is up against youngsters three years older than him, but he continued his impressive autumn taking two medals against the odds.

The Shoebury High School pupil beat a field of 24 to claim the prizes, which came in the three metre and five metre categories, with dives including backwards 2 ½ with 1 ½ somersault, a reverse 2 ½ and backwards 2 ½.

Tyler’s mum Donna said Tyler found the step up in ability a “real challenge”, although he still recorded a personal best.

“He was very nervous before hand,” she said. “He doesn’t need to tell me for me to realise. He got off to a bad start but came back strongly and that says a lot about him.

“He got a personal best score in the five metre platform of 232.60 (previous 228.30) which was really good but he is looking forward to a rest now with his next competition not until after Christmas.”

The youngster has already won gold medals at meetings in Sweden and Rome this year.

Tyler’s next event is the Armada Cup, in Plymouth, next February.
