SOUTHEND United’s promising centre-back Sonny Coutts admits tomorrow night’s third round FA Youth Cup clash against Middlesbrough will mean more to him than most.

The defender was Ricky Duncan’s first signing on his return to Roots Hall nine years ago.

And the Rayleigh based youngster also grew up supporting the Shrimpers.

“I had a few season tickets when I was younger and always dreamt about getting to play for the club at Roots Hall so it’s great that it’s happening now,” said the 16-year-old former Sweyne Park School pupil.

“I still come and watch the first team as much as I can after our matches and of course I would love to go on and play at that level.

“That’s what we’re all working towards but having been here long these games we’re playing now probably mean more to me than some of the lads who have joined in the last couple of years.

“But we’re all really looking forward to playing Middlesbrough and hopefully there will be a good crowd watching.”

However, the Shrimpers will be in for a tough test as Middlesbrough currently top the north group of the under 18 Premier League table.

They have won 11 of their 14 league games so far this term and sit above Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United in the standings.

Coutts is therefore expecting a busy evening in defence.

But he feels if Blues can show the spirit they did when beating Barnet with 10 men in the second round then things could be made difficult for Middlesbrough.

“Middlesbrough are a good team but it will be great to test ourselves against them,” said Coutts.

“From what we’ve heard they like to play out from the back so it should be a good game.

“But hopefully we can play like we can and cause an upset.”

Tomorrow’s game kicks off at 7.30pm with adult tickets costing £3 and concessions £1.
