CANVEY Island claimed an impressive point against promotion-chasing Margate as they bounced back from their midweek disappointment.
Having been beaten by relegation-battlers AFC Hornchurch on Tuesday, Danny Heale’s men couldn’t have wished for a tougher match against the second-placed Kent side.
But they were impressive throughout, having taken the lead through Dave Collis before Jay Curran netted a late leveler.
But it was the visitors who started the brighter. Lewis Taylor and Brett Johnson forced on-loan West Ham United goalkeeper Tim Brown into two fine saves.
Jamie Taylor drove another effort wide before, against the run of play, Canvey took the lead.
George Sykes sent in a cross and Collis crashed home at the far post, after Enoch Showunmi had flicked it into his path.
Mike Jones cleared off the line but Canvey couldn’t hold out until half-time.
Lewis Taylor played in namesake Jamie and he struck beyond Brown into the corner.
And just beyond the hour mark the game had been turned on its head.
Ex-Grays Athletic striker Freddie Ladapo had the easiest of chances after Brown could only strike a clearance off a Margate player and into his path.
Ashley Dumas almost equalised immediately, with Jack Simmons striking just wide soon after.
Nikki Bull saved from Showunmi but it was Canvey who drew level after Sykes won a penalty.
Curran, who had missed a spot-kick in the week, stepped up and sent Bull the wrong way to score.
Canvey Island: Brown, Collis, Jones, Dumas, Smith, Banton, Sykes, Chatting, Showunmi (Dobinson), Curran, Simmons
