STEVE Tilson is backing Adam Barrett to complete a hat-trick of promotions with Southend United this weekend.

Barrett played a prominent part in Tilson’s Blues side going up in both 2005 and 2006, And the former Shrimpers manager now believes the popular centre-back is on the brink of securing another promotion with his home-town club.

“I just had a feeling for four or five games now that this is going to be their season and I fancy them to do it this weekend, especially with Adam involved now,” said Tilson.

“Everyone knows what Adam is about. He’s a real leader around the place and maybe that was something that was missing before.

“He’s had seven clean sheets in a row since going in there and I think he’s showing why he should’ve been back in the team sooner than he actually was.

“In fact, if Luke Prosser hadn’t got injured he might not have played at all.

“But he’s made the most of the chance and I really hope the result goes Southend’s way tomorrow.”

Tilson also enjoyed two promotions with the Shrimpers as a player.

However, he knows the current team will have to work incredibly hard to secure a return to League One.

“It will be a really tough game at Morecambe and it’s certainly not a foregone conclusion Southend will win,” said Tilson.

“Morecambe won’t lie down and die and that showed that by winning at Wycombe last weekend.

“But the breaks are going Southend’s way, they have a great defensive record and are now scoring a few more goals so I think they will do it.”
